FAQs About Cleaning Fireplaces

Identical methods are used for cleaning indoor and outdoor fireplaces. The information offered in this FAQ is applicable to most fireplaces, regardless of age.
- Q: What tools are needed to clean a fireplace?
- A: To clean a fireplace you need a heavy wire brush, soft wire brush, latex gloves and a trashcan lined with multiple layers of trash bags. Before starting the cleaning process it is important to verify the fireplace is cool and no hot coals are present. Eye goggles, filtration masks, drop cloths, a small bucket and a small amount of tri-sodium phosphate are also useful for cleaning a fireplace. TSP is a cleaner commercially available in hardware stores.
- Q: How are irons and grates cleaned?
- A: Irons and grates are best cleaned by removing them from within the fireplace and taking them to an exterior location. Excess soot on the irons and grate is easily removed using a soft wire brush. If these components are made of brass, then a coat of brass polish restores luster and shine after excess soot is removed from the metal.
- Q: How is excess coal in the fireplace disposeof?
- A: Disposing of excess coal within the fireplace is accomplished by using a small shovel to remove the debris and dumping it into a trash or ashcan. It is recommended to wear a filtration mask from this step on to prevent inhalation of particulate matter from within the fireplace.
- Q: How are fireplace walls cleaned?
- A: When excess ash and coal is removed from the fireplace the last remaining task is to deep clean the walls within the chimney to reduce future soot buildup. Mix six tablespoons of tri-sodium phosphate with one cup of chlorine bleach into one gallon of water, for scrubbing the fireplace walls. This mixture is caustic and does burn, so covering the skin, eyes and mouth is essential for proper safety. Scrub the chimney from the top down, and rinse the walls with warm water. During this step it is important to note than in older chimneys some blackened discoloration does not scrub away. Once the walls are rinsed, the cleaning process is complete.
